What Causes Razor Bumps?

Razor bump or shaving bump technically known as Pseudofolliculities Barbae is a derivative of ingrown hairs. Ingrown hair is known to occur when a close shave scraps the skin which causes the hair stubble to become trapped below the surface of the skin. When the hair begins to grow some of it fails to grow out of the hair follicles but instead grows and curls inwards. When the tip of the ingrown hair pierces the skin, it becomes irritated, consequently redness and inflammation sets in which causes a bump on the surface of the skin known as razor bump or shaving bump.



The main cause of razor bump is improper shaving. Shaving with the razor blade follows after some rules. When these rules are not applied however, shaving bumps is the result. If shaving with the razor blade is properly done, ingrown hairs, razor bumps or shaving bumps is avoided. Improper shaving could therefore come in the following ways:

• Use of dull blades to shave: Using dull blades to shave causes the hair to tear unevenly resulting in ingrown hairs which consequently result in bumps. You should therefore endeavor to use new and sharp razor blades to shave.
• Shaving without scrubbing the hair with warm water to moisten it could result in the irritation of the skin and also make the hair hard for shaving thereby causing bumps.
• Shaving against the grain of hair growth points the hair back into the skin causing ingrown hairs and irritation of the skin.
• Shaving over the same area too many times could also cause it. Each stroke removes skin cells which results in unnecessary irritation and consequently bumps.
• Picking or squeezing on razor bumps when it develops the bumps when they develop could make them worse. It should therefore be avoided. Instead treat the bumps as they develop.
• Exerting too much pressure on the skin when shaving could also cause razor bumps. It must therefore be avoided.
• Shaving without applying after shave lotion (especially the one containing lidocrane, oats and talc) could also cause bumps.
• Use of multiple blade shaving sticks could also cause bumps. The “cut” and “lift” effect of multiple blade shaving sticks causes unnecessary irritation and consequently bumps. Single blade shaving sticks is therefore recommended.

How I Prevent Shaving Bumps

I love shaving with the razor blade. Shaving with the blade provides me with the smooth shave that I desire. You see I vehemently dislike shaving with shaving powder. I know there bare millions out there who dislike shaving with shaving powder just like I do. Apart from the horrible smell of the shaving powder, I also vehemently dislike the messy nature when preparing it. The worst part of it is that the shaving powder burns my skin. You can now see the reason why I will go for the razor blade for my shaving any day.

• I endeavor to shave with the grain of the hair growth of my beard. I do not shave against it to avoid hair growth back into the skin and irritation.
• When shaving I often do not go over the same area more than twice. This is because each stroke removes skin cells which results in unnecessary irritation.
• I do not exert too much pressure on the shaving area because this removes additional surface skin.
• I avoid using dull razor blades. My razor blades are often sharp and I replace them regularly. Dull razor blade increases the chance of hairs tearing away.

I am amazed that this stuff really works as an african american female who suffered form hideous and painful razor bumps. Tend Skin is the reason I can shave my legs.

Tend Skin is really only useful for ingrown hairs. It's basically a highly effective exfoliant. It is TOTALLY WORTH THE PRICE if you get really bad ingrown hairs. I have used it for over 10 years. I get ingrown hairs from shaving my legs and waxing body hair. Tend skin makes this bearable, otherwise I'd have to go all hippie and stop shaving all together. I use it once or twice a day, especially in summer. There is another product on the market that has similar ingredients in a gel roll-on, but it isn't strong enough to work.

Drawbacks: The price, obviously. You have to use it daily, especially after waxing. It is a liquid, and most easily applied like toner with a cotton ball. If you use your hands to apply this liquid like a lotion it works, but your hands get peely skin.

Nothing Else Works!

I have used Tend Skin for around three years now for razor bumps on the bikini line. Before I started using it, I had tried everything else and resigned to the fact that I'd always be stuck with bumps along the bikini line. A friend of mine told me about Tend Skin and swore by it, so I bought a small bottle. It seemed like it was expensive, but that first bottle lasted well over 6 months. It does smell like alcohol at first but the smell goes away when it dries. As far as the other reviews on here, I've only had stinging when I used it IMMEDIATELY after shaving...I think b/c the pores were still open from the shower. For me, it's been a skin saver when I'd already given up the search. I hope that the negative reviews on here don't discourage people from trying it. Everyone's skin reacts somewhat differently. Of the millions of bottles of Tend Skin sold every year, I think the half dozen people on here who didn't like it are the few unhappy rarities, not the average who, like me, thank goodness it's around.
